Theme of the Month: Cloak & Dagger
Star of the Month: Michael Fassbender
Come December and I think we’re all a little overtaken by retrospection — it’s the last month of
the year after all, and there comes a point in which we have to consider whether what we've had has been a good year or something of an unbearable cycle of shit hitting a fan. Aside from 2016 being a generally pretty horrible year both in the political and artistic realm (did we really have to lose David Bowie and Prince, universe?), I’ve mostly had a good one — my second year of college has already proven to be infinitely more fulfilling than my first, and I finally have a better sense of myself as an individual. Best yet, I’m overwhelmed by the number of critically acclaimed movies making the rounds these past few months worthy of immediate viewing.
Since I’m essentially in high spirits despite all the upcoming deadlines I’m going to have to meet both academically and professionally now that the first quarter of the year is coming to a close, I figure it’d be fitting to match my ambitions of ending the year with a bang and circle my site around a theme as thrilling as I’m hoping my December will be. And that theme is Cloak & Dagger, which stems from an English term that describes “situations involving intrigue, secrecy, espionage, or mystery.”
Because November was mostly comprised of intimate, oftentimes tragic films, it only makes sense to reverse everything and look at more provocative titles (though with a handful of overflow films pertaining to last month’s theme and with a hopefully high number of reviews of current release movies, who knows how much I’ll be able to keep notions of “cloak and dagger” intact).
To parallel such a potentially action-packed theme, the scrambling to find an actor characterized by a similarly electrifying persona was of utmost importance. And though he’s only recently become a major fixture on the film circuit, arguably finding his breakout in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds less than a decade ago, I couldn’t get the versatile Michael Fassbender out of my head. Akin to Christian Bale or Robert De Niro, Fassbender is one of cinema’s most fearless actors, unafraid to put his career on the line for a project he believes in. I’ll be spotlighting his oeuvre this month. Though he’s only a few years into his career, undoubtable is the reality that he’s going to be among the handful of living cinematic legends. He’s exhilarating in nearly every role he undertakes.
It’d perhaps be smarter to consider December to be unpredictable on Peterson Reviews — there’s a high chance that the onslaught of Oscar movies might undermine thematic plans — but unchanging is my putting of my heart and soul into every piece of writing shared; all I can hope for is the inspiring of experiencing great, undervalued movies. Happy watching, and happy reading!
